Pro Tools 8 Le Free
'Rock solid' is the phrase that comes to mind. I've had a few hundred sessions, some lasting all day, and some just lasting for a few minutes while doing a quick edit, and the 002 has NEVER given me ANY problems in and of itself. I'm running a Mac G5, dual 2.7 processors, pre-Pentium. There are some feature issues that would be preferred, but are definitely not items that should keep you from exploring this setup, as they are not hinderances to the music-making process.
It would be great to have 8 XLR inputs, instead of just 4. Also, like one other poster commented, it would be nice to have gain knobs on TRS channels 5-8. To me, these needs are miniscule. Regarding simplicity, monkey could set up this unit and get it running (once you get all your software authorized). The 002 rack is a solidly built product with great features and value that does exactly what a small studio needs it to do. No, you don't have high-end Avalon or UA or Focusrite preamps, but these are not bad.Actually running Pro Tools is another consideration you need to explore when considerint this purchase. With the advancements in Pro Tools software, there's almost no end to what you can do within the editing domain.
You do need to realize that you are dealing with a software editing program that offers you abilities to edit to your heart's content, but there's always a learning curve if you aren't familiar with a DAW software system. Yeah, Pro Tools and related plug-ins may be a little more pricey, but like the old saying goes, 'You get what you pay for', and Pro Tools is a recognized world-wide platform. I knew I wanted the power of Pro Tools when I purchased my 002 system, and I've never regreted the purchase. Don't bother with purchasing the 003 unless you've got the extra cash.
The only difference that I can tell with the 002 & 003 setup is an extra headphone jack, and the 003 offers a BNC word-clock connection. The 002 system will do everything you need. Just get a good computer (prefereably a Mac or dedicated PC), and jack-up your processing capabilities (I recommend 1.5 gHz or higher), and you'll be able to make music for days - even years! I recently added a new Presonus DigiMAX D8 to my setup to offer 8 more mic inputs, and I connected via TOS-Link (light-pipe), and so far, no glitches. No regrets with my 002 setup. Many, many problems This unit has MAJOR problems when working with a PC. First of all, there are only a handful of computers that are 'digidesign certified' to work with it and Digidesign makes.
This unit has MAJOR problems when working with a PC. First of all, there are only a handful of computers that are 'digidesign certified' to work with it and Digidesign makes NO GURANTEE that it will work at all unless ran on a certified computer. Even if the problem is with the unit itself (defective manufacturing), their customer service staff will fight you tooth and nail to avoid a return unless it runs on one of their certified computers. Expect to spend dozens of hours (no exaggeration) on the phone with them if you have ANY problems with their product. It can sometimes take over an hour just to reach a customer service rep on the phone.I bought this unit expecting it to work right out of the box with a fairly up to date computer (one capable of running the top MMO RPG at the time). However, I realized my computer was not compatible and the protools customer service could not even tell me why it wasn't.
They had my buying new fire wire cards, new hard drives, and all sorts of other crap until I narrowed it down to the processor/motherboard. I wasted lots of money just to figure out why it wasn?t compatible. After a year of owning the unit and never using it, I finally managed to buy a Terra Audio Digidesign certified computer. Even then, I still experience difficulties fairly often. About half of the time it freezes up when starting Protools LE. Since it took me so long to get a compatible computer to run it, my unit is out of warranty. Now, I have to pay for customer support and any repairs that might need to be made to it.
My unit may have been defective all along but they have not fixed it. I even returned it to the company once. I have spent THOUSANDS of dollars (rather foolishly at that) to try and recoup my investment in this unit and I still have many problems. Avoid this product at all costs if using a PC. Pros - Decent sounding preamps, comes with Pro Tools, can move sessions from big studios using Pro Tools HD to home studios using Pro Tools LE, great for live recording and location recording, expandable (can add 8 more channels of input with additional adat preamp)Cons - Digidesign tech support is not very good, there is a problem internally with the 002 - a power adapter cable inside goes bad frequently but tech support will send you out a replacement and its easy to install, not sure if they corrected this problem yet.Overall the 002 is a great value and is worth every penny.
I highly recommend to anyone who wants professional recording features without spending a ton of cash. I now use Pro Tools HD but still have the 002 around for location, live recordings and occasional mixing (moving from old sessions to new system is very easy). Previous reviewers are very confusing. Its important to note the differences. The Digi002R is an excellent piece of hardware.
It is rackmountable for portability, so the control surface obviously disappears. ProTools LE is great. I have both an Alienware Intel Based PC and a brand new Mac Pwerbook G4 with OSX 10.4. I was having a lot of problems with the PC version of ProTools. But that was version 6.7 and earlier. Its very finiky because of what Microsoft did to XP in service pack 2.
Make sure to get it with ProTools 7.0 and you will never have another problem. 7.0 is a dream, not a single issue yet. I never had a problem with the Mac regardless of version, so nothing needs to be said about that.
Oh, and I have run Protools 6.4 on a low end Dell (6000 series) and it worked fine. Recorded an entire 4 hour show without an issue. If you want a control surface, get the COmmand8 or spend the 2G's to get the full blown 002.
Otherwise, You'll love this piece of gear. I have 2 groups of friends: people that record better than me and everyone else. I have friends that are doing great things with Cubase and Sonar. I bought a 002R rack unit to acquire a robust Pro Tools platform for some recent work with a studio / I was sharing files with a professional studio with me recording at home.
It went flawlessly.I am more proud of the ability to produce studio quality tracks at home than I am of some of the performances on that session. It's mind blowing, considering the other ways I have recorded in the past. This is not my first computer based DAW, I also used Cooledit for years and it was great. But not the same quality as my Pro Tools recordings.
My complaints? Be prepared to pay BIG TIME for the effects you want. My Cubase friends and their VST plug ins have a less expensive solution. My Cubase friends also master their recordings with perfection and I haven't learned to do that.
I decided early on that (by buying the 002R), what I was really acquiring was a super clean A/D converter. To summarize: You can get great recordings cheaper than this with other DAW software like Cubase, but you'll love what you can record with Pro Tools. And the rest of your friends (the ones that are barely able to record anything) will be blown AWAY by what Pro Tools does.
It's a giant leap up from most everything else. I wanted to learn Pro Tools so I could see what the studio engineers were doing, and whether they had any tools or magic or abilities that I needed. I have it all with the 002R. I wish plug ins were cheaper, I wish it had more than 32 tracks (yes, I'll be buying the expansion kit), I wish it didn't hog my PC's resources. But I never apologize for buying this package and I would replace it in a heart beat if it stopped working. This unit is a VERY effective tool to record music.
I use it with both a PC and a MAC (Intel based). And though I have had a few problems when using it to mix with the PC it has always been noooo problems when using it for recording. I have an extra 8 channels of input though ADAT and have used it for up to 16 chs simultaneously. For mix and midi I always use the MAC.
It is just much more effecient and just 'feels' better on the MAC. If you follow their guide on compatability you should have no problems either way! I cannot beleive how easy and efficient this is. I have saved tons of time mixing and editing vs. My old Hard Disk Recorder. Even recording became easier now that I only see the tracks I want, and I can name them and group them on the fly. The machine is great, too.
Although portable, I wouldn't throw it around with my road gear. But it is extremely flexible, like having several outputs that I can use as alternate monitor mixes. This replaces half of the outboard gear I own. I would like to have controls on the front for all eight channels instead of just the first four but overall I cannot complain. The sound is excellent and Pro Tools is unbeleivable. By the way, I use a PC and I only had one small but annoying problem with my PT LE 6.9.
The buttons would sometimes lockup when performing operations like creating more tracks. I would have to restart the program, but after upgrading to version 7.0 (which also forced me to get WindowsXP SERVICE PACK 2), that problem disappeared. So don't be affraid if you don't have a great MAC, my PC is a homemade P4 2.4Ghz with 1Gb RAM. I use a second internal IDE drive for audio and only have to pull my Firewire drive in for backups. I've had my 002 rack for 3 years now, and I've never had a glitch with my setup. 'Rock solid' is the phrase that comes to mind. I recently added a new Presonus DigiMAX D8 to my setup to offer 8 more mic inputs, and I connected via TOS-Link (light-pipe), and so far, no glitches. No regrets with my 002 setup. It doesn't come with a control surface, so mixing and recording is a little more difficult. Also, its 4 mic inputs can be limiting when it comes to recording things, such as drums or full bands. Otherwise, you can do almost anything with it that is imaginable. It's a great tool and is quite a bit less then the next pro tools upgrade. So for the money, it can get you wherever you want to go.
Much better than a stand-alone workstation, because you aren't limited to what you have, you can upgrade. Anyways, pro tools is aptly named because if you put in the effort and have proper recording technique and good mics, you can sound just like a pro.
