I posted this as a response to another thread, but I'm posting it as a separate new thread so more people who might benefit from it can find it more easily. I just found a place where you can download the entire book of 'Universal Method for the Saxophone' by Paul de Ville.for free.
Seems there is no longer a Copyright since it was first published in 1908. It may be cheaper to buy a copy from Amazon.com or somewhere else than to print 300+ pages on your own computer.but if you download the pdf of the book, you can see what's in it.or you can print out specific exercises rather than printing the entire book.or you can sit in front of your computer monitor to play the exercises. Here's the link.archive.org/details/universalmethodf00villuoft (It seems sotw wouldn't let it post properly as a complete link.so I removed the http and www part. You'll have to c&p the address and add the www back to it). As someone who works in the largest sheet music store in Canada (and Perhaps north america) Isn't this incredibly incredibly illegal? The book is still under copyright isn't it?
Just because the first publishing was in 1908 doesn't mean Carl Fischer has Lost all rights to it. I mean we place orders for these on a daily basis. I know just because it's illegal it won't stop people from doing it (a la music sharing) but isn't it just rubbing it in to post it on an open forum. Correct me if I'm wrong. While I'm not absolutely 100% positive.I do believe you're wrong in this case. According to the information on that website, no current copyright is in effect. (I did some further searching on my own.including searching under Carl Fischer.and I couldn't find any evidence of a current copyright). The library catalog it comes from also appears to be hosted or sponsored by MSN (Microsoft) for educational purposes.
As far as I can tell.the book is being offered LEGALLY as a free download for EDUCATIONAL purposes. While I'm not absolutely 100% positive.I do believe you're wrong in this case. I'll be sure to inform all my customers who are about to fork out $50 for the regular copy that the can get it for free online. It comes to wonder though. Why wouldn't Carl Fischer renew the copyright on such a popular selling item? Especially when they pay money themselves to print and distribute it. Maybe they will when they see the sales go down. Thanks for posting this Cool Jazz. I know there's a few pages in there that I've wanted to just photocopy without having to buy the whole damn thing.

Maybe they will when they see the sales go down. That IS an interesting question.but I'm not so sure that Carl Fischer is even publishing it any more.

You would probably know the answer to that better than I would since you're in that side of the business. I did find sources saying that it had also been published by 'Budge Press' (?).but I wasn't able to locate any current copyright information on that one either. Perhaps Budge Press picked it up when Fischer failed to renew the copyright.and then they let it expire as well? At any rate.it certainly isn't my intent to help share something illegally if it is in fact still under copyright. I have my own copy that I bought for $7.50 brand new when I was a student (if that tells you how old I am). After reading the background information about the 'Microsoft Book Search' service and the 'Open Content Alliance' however.it does appear that this book is being offered legitimately by those services under the 'educational purposes' umbrella.

If it turns out that I'm wrong about that.I'll gladly ask the moderators to remove this thread with my apologies to anyone it may have infringed on. Cooljazz, I do believe you are correct as I was just informed about the 'Mickey Mouse copyright law'. Whenever Mickey Mouse is about to come out of copyright a law is passed that extends copyright law.
Originally public domain occurred after seventy five years. Now after several 'Mouse legislations' public domain is at 90 years which makes me wonder if at a point some things that have been out of copyright will suddenly pop back in. Although I don't think this applies to books. However the book is indeed still distributed and printed by C.F.
As we get several copies with every general stock order from them that we place. I instantly asked.
Well why doesn't C.F. Just extend the copyright on their popular selling items. They aren't a multi multi multi billion dollar corporation Too bad so sad Carl Fischer. Well I'm glad that's all settled now. I did even more research after posting.and finally got the lowdown directly from the copyright.gov website.confirming that anything published before 1922 is now officially 'public domain'.as has already been pointed out further down the page.
It still makes sense for companies like Carl Fischer to print copies of it because being such a large book, it really does cost about as much to print it at home as it would cost to buy the book.and when you buy the book you get a nice, clean, pre-bound book rather than 300+ loose pages. Still.it's there and it's free for whoever can make use of it.
