- Uniform Tire Quality Grading, commonly abbreviated as UTQG, is the term encompassing a set of standards for passenger car tires that measures a tire's treadwear, temperature resistance and traction. This new Segun Bucknor collection from Vampisoul updates the 12-song 2002 collection, which is all but out-of-print. The new collection adds only five songs: 'Only In My Sleep,' 'Baby Get Your Thing,' 'Ayinde Ogo,' 'Adebo,' and, ironically, 'Poor Man Get No Brother.' 'Smoke' is retitled 'Gbmojo,' and 'La La La (Hard Version Part 2)' is the only song to not make it onto the new collection.

I am not sure what prompted this omission as the two CDs together barely top 90 minutes leaving plenty of room for the song. Segun Bucknor plays a mellower, jazzier style of afrobeat than most and his band is capable of locking into some serious grooves. A couple of his best songs have been highlights on other collections from this era. The songs here range from the jazzy instrumental 'Gbmojo,' which appeared on, to the hard-rocking 'La La La (Hard Version Part 1),' which appeared on. The remaining gem of this collection might be the inaccurately-named 'La La La (Acoustic Version).' Although the guitar part is played on an acoustic guitar, the bass is electric as are the keyboards.
This slower 10 minute version of the song features some great solos and a relaxed exploration of the groove. I also like 'Love and Affection' which rocks like the hard version of La La La.
The past few years have seen an explosion of 1970's West African rereleases. I probably wouldn't make this collection one of my first choices-if you don't have Soundway's Nigeria Afrobeat Special, buy that first or Analog Africa's; either one, you won't be sorry- but it is a solid addition to the 'canon.'
